It is a white, odorless, crystalline powder with a slightly acidic taste, belonging to the class of aliphatic dicarboxylic acids. As one of the most important dicarboxylic acids in the chemical industry, adipic acid is a core raw material for the production of nylon 6,6, and is widely used in polymers, coatings, lubricants, and food additives.
Principais aplicações
Polymer Industry: The primary application (accounting for ~90% of global production) is as a monomer for synthesizing nylon 6,6 (polyhexamethylene adipamide), which is produced by polycondensation with hexamethylenediamine. Nylon 6,6 is widely used in fibers, engineering plastics, and textiles due to its high strength, wear resistance, and heat resistance.
Revestimentos e adesivos: Used to produce polyester resins, polyurethane coatings, and epoxy curing agents, improving the adhesion, flexibility, and chemical resistance of coating films.
Lubricants & Plasticizers: Serves as a raw material for manufacturing adipate esters (e.g., dioctyl adipate, DOA), which are high-performance plasticizers for PVC and synthetic rubbers, and lubricant additives for automotive and industrial machinery.
Food & Beverage Industry: Approved as a food additive (E355) for use as an acidity regulator, flavor enhancer, and leavening agent in baked goods, beverages, and confectionery. It is also used as a sequestrant to bind metal ions and improve product stability.
Outras utilizações: Applied in the production of detergents, water treatment chemicals, and pharmaceutical intermediates.
