Technical Introduction
Maleic Anhydride, abbreviated as MA, is a colorless, crystalline cyclic anhydride and a key unsaturated organic intermediate. It is one of the most widely produced anhydrides globally, valued for its high reactivity and versatility in synthesizing polymers, specialty chemicals, and agrochemicals.

2. Industrial Applications
MA’s high reactivity makes it a cornerstone intermediate in multiple industries:
Unsaturated Polyester Resins (UPR) – Largest Application Copolymerized with glycols (e.g., ethylene glycol, propylene glycol) and unsaturated acids to produce UPR, the key raw material for fiberglass-reinforced plastics (FRP). FRP is widely used in construction, automotive parts, boat hulls, and pipes due to its lightweight and high strength.
Lubricant Additives
Reacted with alcohols or amines to produce succinic anhydride derivatives, which are used as dispersants and detergents in engine oils, improving lubricant performance and reducing carbon deposits.
Agrochemicals & Pharmaceuticals
Serves as a precursor for synthesizing herbicides (e.g., glyphosate intermediates), insecticides, and pharmaceutical active ingredients (e.g., anti-inflammatory drugs, antibiotics). Its cyclic structure enables the formation of bioactive molecular frameworks.
