Propylene Carbonate (PC) CAS No.108-32-7

Propylene Carbonate (PC) CAS No.108-32-7

Propylene Carbonate, commonly abbreviated as PC, is a colorless, odorless, high-boiling-point viscous liquid with the chemical formula C4H6O3 (structural formula: C4H6O3, cyclic carbonate structure) and CAS number 108-32-7. It is a non-toxic, biodegradable green solvent with excellent polarity, thermal stability, and chemical inertness. As a versatile chemical intermediate and solvent, PC is widely used in lithium-ion batteries, chemical synthesis, and gas separation, and is recognized as an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional polar solvents.

Key Applications

Lithium-ion Battery Electrolyte (Core Use): PC is a critical high-boiling-point solvent in lithium-ion battery electrolytes. It dissolves lithium salts (e.g., LiPF₆) efficiently, improves electrolyte conductivity and thermal stability, and enhances battery performance at low temperatures. It is widely used in consumer electronics, electric vehicle batteries, and energy storage systems.

Chemical Synthesis Intermediate: Serves as a raw material for transesterification reactions to produce dimethyl carbonate (DMC) and dipropylene glycol. It is also used in the synthesis of pharmaceuticals, pesticides, and polyurethanes, replacing toxic reagents such as phosgene and dimethyl sulfate.

Gas Separation Solvent: Excellent solubility for polar gases (e.g., (CO2), (H2S), (SO2) makes PC an ideal solvent for natural gas purification and flue gas treatment. It selectively absorbs acidic gases, reducing environmental pollution and improving gas quality.

Industrial Solvent: Used as a high-performance solvent in coatings, inks, adhesives, and cleaning agents. Its low volatility and high solvency power ensure uniform film formation and reduce VOC emissions, complying with strict environmental regulations for coatings and printing industries.

Other Uses: Applied as a humectant in cosmetics and personal care products; used as a plasticizer for cellulose and polyvinyl chloride (PVC); and serves as a heat transfer fluid in high-temperature industrial systems.
