Carbonato de dimetilo (DMC) Nº CAS 616-38-6

Carbonato de dimetilo (DMC) Nº CAS 616-38-6

Dimethyl Carbonate, abbreviated as DMC, is a colorless, transparent, low-odor liquid with the chemical formula C3H6O3 (structural formula: CH3OCOOCH3) and CAS number 616-38-6. Classified as a green organic chemical intermediate, DMC features low toxicity, high biodegradability, and excellent reactivity. It is widely recognized as an environmentally friendly alternative to phosgene, methyl iodide, and dimethyl sulfate—highly toxic reagents used in traditional chemical synthesis. DMC has broad applications in the production of polycarbonates, pharmaceuticals, and pesticides.

Key Applications

Polycarbonate Synthesis (Primary Use): DMC is a core raw material for producing polycarbonate (PC) via transesterification with bisphenol A. Unlike the phosgene method, this process is non-toxic and pollution-free, producing high-quality PC used in automotive parts, electronic components, and building materials.

Chemical Intermediate for Methylation/Ethylation: DMC replaces toxic reagents (dimethyl sulfate, methyl iodide) in methylation reactions to synthesize pharmaceuticals, pesticides, and fine chemicals. For example, it is used to produce antipyretic and analgesic drugs, herbicides, and dyes.

Solvent & Fuel Additive: As a low-toxicity solvent, DMC is used in coatings, inks, and adhesives, improving product solubility and reducing VOC emissions. It also acts as a fuel additive to enhance octane rating, reduce carbon deposits, and lower exhaust emissions (e.g., NOx, particulate matter).

Electrolyte for Lithium-ion Batteries: High-purity DMC is a key component of electrolytes in lithium-ion batteries, providing good solubility for lithium salts, high conductivity, and excellent electrochemical stability. It is widely used in consumer electronics and electric vehicle batteries.

Other Uses: Applied in the synthesis of polyurethanes, organic carbonates, and biodegradable polymers; used as a cleaning agent for precision instruments and electronic components.
